boot problem

I rebooted after getting some microsoft security updates and ran
into a problem I've never experienced. Whether I select to start in
safe mode, safe mode in this, safe mode in that, last configuration
that worked or normal mode, I never get to the start screen, I
always end up right where I start.

I've had some comp problems that I've worked through but I've always
managed to search the net to find the solution on my own. Right now
I'm on a back up laptop and on a text only account. I can't visit
places to figure this out on my own.

Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks in advance.

XP? Boot from install cd and choose repair console. Now you will be at
command line. Chkdsk C: /r followed by fixboot C: where C is where OS
resides.
Good Luck

Yes, xp home edition. It's the equivalent of a flat spin in a plane
because there seems like nothing I can do. Using f8 and f10, I've
gotten to more options but none of those have done me any good. I
haven't been able to get to install cd with anything I've done.

I'm tenacious but it's looking like mission impossible. I've copied
down your instructions and I'm going to keep trying. Thanks for the
suggestion.

I won't even try to sound like I know what I'm talking about because I
don't. Somehow I've done everything up to and including the repair.
Then I got a: Which Windows installation would you like to log onto
prompt. I entered 1 and got c:\windows prompt. I did the fixboot c:
you suggested. . .

I got "The new bootsector was successfully written. followed by the

c:\windows>

Now I don't really know what to do.

Yes, I'm that computer illiterate. I can't believe I got this far.
I guess I'll begin shooting in the dark until I really f*ck things up
or until you reply. :)

Thanks again. I'm actually having some fun but there's something
wrong with me.

Sounds like the Microsoft update had some issues, happens sometimes am I
right in thinking your computer is looping ? can you get into safe mode?
if so uninstall/remove the last update/hotfix from the add-remove
program's in the control panel.

I see from your last post you are having difficulty's with the repair
mode, the command you want is checkdisk (or chkdsk /p /r)

Ok, I went through the process again and during the chkdsk /r process,
I got a "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable
problems" message.

Looks like it's hammer time. Sledgehammer time that is.
Thanks for helping all the same, I guess the situation was a little to
severe to overcome. Personally, I'm blaming M$. :)

Try another Hard drive.

I tried the process again and I can't explain how but I made it all
through until the last screen before you hit the start up screen. I'm
at the "M$ windows xp" screen. I'm getting a "please wait..." message
and the little hourglass thingy. It's been like that for about 1/2 hr.
I don't know if it's going to get past this but I'm pretty happy getting
this far.

It was looping and safe mode or any other mode wouldn't get me out of
the loop. I followed TeeJay instructions with the chkdsk /r and I've
muddled my way through to almost reaching my start up screen. At least
I've out of the death loop so hopefully that means real progress. :)

if your still having problems you can try a Repair install, its like a
normal install but you don't format the drive.

Woohoo! It's done, I've got my internet back. Bad news is I've lost
everything I had on my comp before the reboot death spiral. Good news
is I didn't really have anything to lose. Yes, I had everything set up
the way I liked it but big deal.

Mission accomplished,

Thanks.
