On this day in 1776, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia introduces a
resolution for independence to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia;
John Adams seconds the motion.

Death in Quebec

Quebec Quebec - Irish Immigrants arrive aboard the sailing ship Carrick
from Dublin; a government inspector lets the vessel leave the quarantine
station, but some of the Irish have Asian cholera, which soon spreads in
Quebec and Montreal; the resulting epidemic kills about 6,000 people in
Lower Canada.

Jun 7, 1948:
Czechoslovakian president Benes resigns

Eduard Benes resigns as president of Czechoslovakia rather than sign a
new constitution that would make his nation into a communist state. His
resignation removed the last remnant of democratic government in
Czechoslovakia and cleared the way for a communist-controlled regime.
